A family workshop. A little Scottish stubbornness. A lot of sawdust.

Meet The Maker(s)

Built on Scottish values of hard work, craftsmanship, and doing things properly,

B&M Woodworks is a Kelowna family operation creating handcrafted woodwork designed to be used, loved, and eventually passed down.

What started with a love of working with wood has become a family affair. Everyone has a part to play, although some contributions are admittedly more useful than others.

Barry | The Maker

Scottish born and raised, Barry brought an appreciation for traditional craftsmanship when he moved to Canada. Barry is the hands behind B&M Woodworks, selecting the wood, creating the designs, and turning raw hardwood into one-of-a-kind pieces.

From end-grain chopping boards to kitchenware and custom creations, he believes the natural character of the wood should be part of the finished piece. Knots, grain, colour and variation aren't imperfections. They're what make every piece unique.

Madison | The Next Generation

At 12 years old, Madison is already learning the family trade while balancing another major commitment: All Star cheerleading.

With competitive cheer comes plenty of training and travel, so helping with B&M Woodworks has become Madison's way of contributing towards the costs that come with pursuing that passion.

Along the way, Madison is learning that beautiful things take patience, hard work and more sanding than anyone initially tells you about.

Summer | Sweeping Department

Summer represents the next generation of the next generation and currently holds one of the workshop's most important positions: sawdust and sweeping operations.

Additional responsibilities include locating suitable offcuts for Sunny, supervising general workshop activity and occasionally reminding everyone that there are more interesting things in life than sanding.

Career progression is expected.

Sunny | Scrap Wood Department

Every woodworking shop needs quality control. Ours has four paws.

Sunny is the resident workshop companion and unofficial Scrap Wood Clean-Up Crew, always available to investigate an interesting offcut and keep a close eye on workshop proceedings.

Whether this improves productivity remains open to debate.

Mhairi | The One Behind the Camera

Also Scottish, Mhairi handles much of what happens outside the workshop: photography, social media, marketing and helping tell the B&M Woodworks story.

Rarely in front of the camera, but almost always behind it, Mhairi is responsible for making sure the finished pieces actually make it out of the workshop and into the world.

And, like most family businesses, the official job description includes “whatever else needs doing.”
